It is easy to assume that because Gansbaai and Hermanus are both Overstrand, they are the same system with a longer drive between them. Administratively that is true. Physically it is not, and the difference is worth knowing before you accept advice that was written for somewhere else.
Gansbaai has its own local Overstrand office, on 028 384 8300, and its own wastewater treatment works. It is not on the Greater Hermanus supply, which is the blend of De Bos Dam surface water and Table Mountain Group borehole water assembled at Preekstoel. That distinction matters practically, because the iron and manganese deposit behaviour that shapes so much of what goes wrong in a Hermanus house is a Greater Hermanus phenomenon tied to that specific blend. Assuming it applies here would be guessing, and this site does not guess about which town a fact belongs to.
What Gansbaai does share with the rest of the district is the seasonal shape and the absentee ownership, and those drive the same failures. A property that stands empty through winter and fills in December has nobody present to notice a leak starting, and the municipality's own account of consumption in this district describes occupation here as unpredictable. A leak that begins in May is discovered in December, if it is discovered at all.
The distance adds one more variable that Hermanus does not have. Forty minutes each way means a Gansbaai call-out is a planned trip, and it means that in a genuine emergency the first fifteen minutes are yours rather than ours. That is not a disclaimer, it is a reason to know where your stopcock is and whether it turns. A stopcock that closes stops the damage completely, no matter how far away anybody is.
The practical arrangement that works best down here is therefore batching and planning. If it is not an emergency, say so when you call. Work that can wait for a day we are already coming down the R43 costs you less, and there is no sense paying for the drive twice.
Do you charge more to come out to Gansbaai?
The call-out reflects the distance, and it is quoted to you before anybody leaves. Gansbaai is roughly forty minutes down the R43 from Hermanus, so it is a planned trip rather than a five-minute one. Where a job can wait a day, going out on a day we are already down that way is cheaper for everybody.

The Overstrand office for Gansbaai is on 028 384 8300, and the 24-hour control room is 028 313 8111. Gansbaai is the same municipality as Hermanus, so the reporting structure is identical even though the local office and the works are its own.
Do you cover De Kelders, Franskraal and Kleinbaai as well?
Yes, they are all on the same run. De Kelders in particular sits on very different ground from the rest of the Overstrand coast, which occasionally matters for drainage runs and for anything that has to be dug.
Can you do a job while we are not there?
Yes, and a lot of Gansbaai work is exactly that. A key-holder, photographs of what was found before we start, and written approval before anything beyond making it safe. Nothing gets decided on your behalf.
What is the most common call from Gansbaai?
Hot water, by a distance, which matches the pattern across the whole district. Geyser work dominates what people in the Overstrand call a plumber about, and after that it is drains.
How quickly can you get to Gansbaai in an emergency?
Longer than to Hermanus, and we will tell you a realistic figure when you call rather than an optimistic one. In the meantime the most useful thing is closing the stopcock, which stops the damage regardless of how far away anybody is.
Is the water in Gansbaai the same as Hermanus?
Not the same supply. Greater Hermanus is fed from De Bos Dam blended with Table Mountain Group borehole water at Preekstoel, and Gansbaai sits on its own arrangement with its own wastewater works. The Hermanus iron and manganese story is a Greater Hermanus story, so do not assume the same deposit behaviour here.
