Gauged Diagnosis

Home/Water Pressure Repairs
Water pressure repairs in Hermanus start with a gauge, because the same weak shower can be a seized valve, a corroded supply run, or the network doing exactly what the municipality has said it will do at peak times.
Tell us whether it is the whole house or one fitting, and whether it changes with the time of day. Those two answers decide almost everything.
Two of them cost nothing to correct. Knowing which one you have is the entire job.
Static and dynamic pressure recorded at the meter and at the worst fitting, which is where the answer actually comes from.
Failed, wrongly rated or never fitted. The cheapest single component protecting everything downstream of it.
Corroded or partly collapsed sections between the meter and the house, which throttle everything behind them.
A valve half closed years ago and forgotten. More common than any other cause and free to correct.
A tank that fills at whatever the network gives and a pump that delivers a consistent pressure regardless.
One weak tap in a strong house. Almost always the aerator or the cartridge, and almost never worth a pump.
Most towns leave you guessing about this. The Overstrand does not, and the municipality's own notices are the single most useful document a homeowner here can read before phoning a plumber about weak water. In December 2025, writing about Kleinmond and Palmiet, Overstrand set out exactly what it was doing and why: its operational team was conducting daily maintenance on the pressure reducing valve setup to clean strainers and keep water flowing, it was checking shut-off valves regularly to confirm they were fully open, and it had instructed teams to flush the valves during low peak times to reduce the impact on supply.
Read that as a plumber and three things jump out. First, this network runs on pressure reducing valves, which means pressure here is deliberately managed rather than simply delivered. Second, those valves have strainers that need cleaning daily, which tells you the water carries enough material to block a strainer in a day. Third, and most usefully, the municipality is openly checking whether its own shut-off valves are fully open, which is an admission that a partly closed valve somewhere upstream is a real and recurring cause of the thing you are experiencing.
The same notice is equally direct about the limits. It states that the problem of low pressure will not be fully resolved in the short term, particularly during periods of high demand due to the influx of holidaymakers, that pipe bursts in the area were also affecting flow, and that a permanent solution will require replacing the old asbestos pipes. That is a municipality telling its residents plainly that in certain areas the weakness is structural and seasonal, not something happening in their houses.
Which is why a gauge, not a pump, is the first thing that should arrive at your property. A gauge on an outside tap gives two numbers: static pressure with everything closed, and dynamic pressure with a tap running. If static is healthy and dynamic collapses, the restriction is inside your property and it is findable. If both are low, and low at the meter, your plumbing is fine and the supply is what it is. Left on the tap for a day, the gauge also shows whether the weakness follows the clock, which is the signature of demand rather than of a defect.
Those two outcomes lead to completely different work, which is why guessing is expensive. A restriction is repaired. A genuinely low supply is not repaired at all, it is designed around, with storage that fills whenever the network allows and a pump that delivers consistently from the tank. Before anybody sells you a booster pump in Hermanus, ask for the static and dynamic readings at the meter. A pump fitted to a supply that is restricted upstream will cavitate, wear out early, and give you very little.
Pressure is the easiest complaint to sell an unnecessary pump against.
Static and dynamic at the meter, recorded and shown to you. Everything else follows from those numbers.
Half-closed valves and blocked aerators cost nothing to correct and are checked before anything is quoted.
If the supply itself is weak we say so, even though "fit a pump" would be the easier sale.
Where the supply is genuinely low, storage and a pump beat a pump alone, and we will explain why.
What do water pressure repairs cost in Hermanus?
The gauge test comes first and it is the cheapest part. Replacing a pressure control valve or a seized isolating valve is a small job. Renewing a corroded supply run or fitting a booster set is not, and it is quoted only after the readings show that is genuinely what is needed.
Why does my pressure drop in the evening?
Because everybody else is also drawing water. That is demand on the local zone rather than a fault at your property, and it will follow a daily pattern. A gauge left on an outside tap for twenty-four hours shows the pattern clearly, and a pattern that repeats at the same time each day is not a fault in your plumbing.
Can I just fit a booster pump and be done with it?
Sometimes, and sometimes it makes things worse. A pump on a supply that is already restricted upstream will cavitate and shorten its own life while barely improving flow. A pump is the right answer to genuinely low incoming pressure with an unrestricted supply, and the wrong answer to a partly closed valve or a furred-up run.
Only the hot water is weak. Is that the geyser?
Usually the cold feed into it, or the geyser’s own valves. Where the cold side is strong at every tap and the hot side is weak everywhere, the restriction is between the cold main and the cylinder outlet, which narrows it to a handful of components.
Is high pressure a problem too?
It is, and it is the one nobody calls about. Pressure above what your valves and fittings are rated for shortens the life of every flexible connection, every cistern inlet and the geyser itself. A pressure control valve set correctly is inexpensive and it protects everything downstream of it.
Can water pressure be measured properly, or is it a feel thing?
It is measured. A gauge on an outside tap gives static pressure with everything closed and dynamic pressure with a tap running, and the gap between the two is the diagnosis. A large drop when a tap opens means restriction. Both readings low means the supply itself is low.
Our whole street has weak pressure. Is anything going to change?
Overstrand has said publicly, about Kleinmond and Palmiet, that low pressure will not be fully resolved in the short term during periods of high demand, and that the permanent solution requires replacing old asbestos pipes in the area. Where a street is affected as a street, that is the honest picture, and a pressure vessel or storage tank at your property is the practical response.
What is the point of a storage tank if the pressure is low?
It decouples you from the network. The tank fills slowly at whatever pressure is available, including overnight when demand is lowest, and a pump draws from the tank at a consistent pressure whenever you need it. It also means an interruption to the supply does not immediately mean no water.
