Plumber Prices
in Hermanus

Plumber prices in Hermanus are two numbers, not one: what it costs to find out what is wrong, and what it costs to put right. Keeping them separate is what stops the second one being a guess.

Get A Straight Figure

Describe the job. Where it is a known quantity you will get a number back. Where it is not, you will get the call-out figure and an honest account of what it depends on.

Six Things That Make Up The Number

Every invoice is assembled from these. None of them is hidden inside another one.

The Call-Out

Travel plus the time to establish the fault. Quoted as a number before dispatch, and separate from the repair.

The Diagnosis

Testing, gauging and isolating until the cause is named. This is the product, and it is what the call-out buys.

The Repair Quote

Given after the diagnosis, with the fault named. Nothing proceeds until you have agreed to that second figure.

Parts At Cost Plus

The part, and a stated margin on it. Not a mystery line item that quietly carries the profit for the whole job.

After-Hours Rates

Higher, and said out loud before anybody is dispatched. Saturday to one o’clock is normal time.

The Certificate

Where the job needs one, it is in the quote and it is handed over before the final invoice closes.

What A Call-Out Buys, And When It Buys Nothing

Search for a plumber in this town and Google's own People Also Ask box tells you what everybody actually wants to know. Every single question in it is about money or about vetting: what a call-out fee typically is, what it costs to replace a toilet, what plumbers charge per point, what replacing taps costs, how to verify a plumber, what the signs of a good one are. The first related search under the results is the word prices. Nobody is searching for craftsmanship. They are searching for a way not to be taken advantage of.

The reason is visible in the public record of how these jobs go wrong, and the pattern is consistent. One account in this district describes a hot water system that kept tripping the electricity, an element declared faulty and replaced at considerable cost, and the diagnostic controller never having reported an element fault at all. Another describes the opposite failure: a tradesman who arrived, discussed the problems at length, and did nothing. A third describes phoning about a leak and being told that if the caller did not know where it was, how was the plumber supposed to. All three are the same complaint wearing different clothes. The customer paid for a diagnosis and did not get one.

So the position this site takes is that the diagnosis is the product, not a free courtesy thrown in before the real selling starts. The call-out fee exists to buy an hour of somebody competent working out what is actually wrong, with instruments, and then telling you in plain words. It is charged whether or not that hour ends in a repair, because the hour happened either way and it is worth exactly as much when the answer is good news.

The consequence you should hold us to is the uncomfortable one. Sometimes the honest finding is that nothing needs replacing. A tap that needed its aerator rinsed. A pressure complaint that turned out to be the network at peak time. A geyser that needed draining rather than a new element. On those visits the invoice is the call-out and nothing else, and that is the correct outcome rather than a wasted trip. A business that cannot afford that outcome has a strong incentive to find something to replace, and that incentive is precisely what the reviews above are describing.

It also explains why the call-out is not refunded against the repair. A refundable call-out is not free; it is recovered inside the repair price, so the people who go ahead quietly subsidise the visits of the people who do not. When you compare two plumbing quotes, check whether the call-out is separate and whether the quote names the fault. A quote that describes a replacement without naming what failed is a price for a guess.

Four Things About Money

The first one costs us money on a regular basis, which is how you know it is real.

Nothing Replaced On A Guess

A part is proved to have failed before it is quoted. Sometimes that means the invoice is just the call-out.

Two Figures, Both In Advance

The call-out before dispatch and the repair before the repair. No number appears first on an invoice.

Itemised, Always

Parts, labour and call-out shown separately, which is also what an insurer needs to process a claim.

A Call Before It Grows

If opening it up changes the price, work stops and you decide. A quote that grows quietly is not a quote.

Pricing Questions

What is the typical call-out fee for a plumber in Hermanus?

It varies by distance and by hour, and ours is quoted to you as a specific number before anybody is dispatched rather than described as a range. What it buys is travel plus the time to establish what is wrong. It is not a deposit against the repair and it is not a fee for turning up and looking sympathetic.

Is the call-out refunded if I go ahead with the work?

No, and we would rather explain why than pretend. A refundable call-out is not free, it is built into the repair price, which means the person who accepts the quote pays for the visits of the people who did not. Keeping them separate means the repair figure is the actual repair figure.

How much do plumbers charge per point?

Per point is a pricing unit for new installation work rather than for repairs: one fitting, its supply, its waste and its isolation. It is a fair unit because it scales with the work, and it lets you compare two quotes properly instead of comparing two lump sums.

Why can you not give me a price over the phone?

For some things we can and will. A tap washer, a toilet inlet valve or a standard element are known quantities and you can have those figures now. What cannot be priced blind is anything where the cause is unknown, because that price would have to assume the worst case, and you would be paying for that assumption.

What makes one job cost more than the same job next door?

Access, mostly. A geyser above a hatch you can stand in and a geyser at the far end of a low roof space are the same component and a very different day. After access it is condition: seized valves, corroded connections and pipework that was never left serviceable all add time that has nothing to do with the fault you called about.

Do you charge more after hours and on weekends?

Yes, and the higher figure is quoted before dispatch, not applied afterwards. Saturday mornings are within normal hours until one o’clock. Sundays are emergencies only, and if what you have is not one we will tell you and book Monday instead.

How do I compare two plumbing quotes properly?

Check three things. Is the call-out separate from the repair, or hidden inside it. Is the fault named, or does the quote describe a replacement without saying what failed. And does the quote include the certificate. Two numbers that look similar can be very different jobs once you have those answers.

What if the price changes once you have opened it up?

Then the work stops and you get a call, before anything further is done. A quote that grows silently is not a quote. Where there is a genuine risk of finding something worse, we say so upfront and give you both figures so the decision is yours in advance rather than ours in the moment.

Describe the job and you will get either a figure or an honest account of what the figure depends on. Both are more useful than a range.
