Sandbaai does not appear in Overstrand's reporting as a general area with general problems. It appears with a street name. When the municipality accounted for storm-driven sewer spills in Greater Hermanus during the February 2026 flooding, three locations were named: Silver Oaks in Main Road, Northcliff, Nkwenkwizi Street in Zwelihle, and De Villiers Street in Sandbaai.
Alongside those specifics the municipality gave the general picture, and it is the more useful half. Sewer pump stations across the Overstrand, it reported, were struggling with stormwater ingress and overflows. That single sentence explains a category of call that almost every homeowner misreads.
A foul sewer is sized for foul water. It is designed for the fairly predictable flow of kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, and nothing more. Rainwater is not supposed to be in it at all, but it gets in anyway: through stormwater connections made decades ago that should never have existed, through cracked pipes and displaced joints below ground, and through manhole covers sitting under standing water. Once enough gets in, the sewer is full. It cannot take any more from anywhere, including from your house, and your perfectly clear drains have nothing wrong with them at all.

What is the most useful thing to fit on a low-lying property?
